Network Upgrade

For

CDF Assembly Hall

Abstract: In preparation for the CDF Run II Experiment, new data acquisition and diagnostics hardware is being installed in the B0 Assembly Hall. The current network infrastructure cannot support the required bandwidth of 100Mbps or beyond. It is proposed that a structured cabling plant using category 5 unshielded twisted pair wiring be installed along with new LAN switching fabric.

Overview

The installation of new data acquisition equipment for the CDF RUN II experiment has created the need to upgrade the existing network infrastructure at the B0 Assembly Building. The CDF Online LAN currently installed is a shared 10Mbps backbone consisting of thick/thin wire with a number of obsolete DEMPRS and DELNIS located in the third floor computer room. This model is incapable of providing the bandwidth of 100Mbps specified in CDF RUN II network requirements.

The strategy for upgrading the CDF Online LAN is to migrate from a shared 10Mbps backbone to a dedicated switched 100Mbps network. To accomplish this, it is recommended that a structured Category 5 (Cat 5) Unshielded Twisted Pair cabling plant be installed along with a LAN switch fabric capable of providing 100Mbps connections to each system.

This plan does not include network support for office PCs and workstation. Only devices associated with running the experiment are covered in this plan. An overall strategy for the entire B0 complex will be discussed in the future.

Proposed Upgrade

The proposed upgrade is to install structured centralized wiring from a single concentration point-using Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (Cat 5) cabling and a LAN switch capable of providing 100Mbps. The Cat 5 cables will run throughout the B0 Assembly Building counting rooms terminating into Siemon "1U" patch panel and SM6 junction boxes. The majority of "1U" patch panels in the first and second floor will be mounted in racks to accommodate the data acquisition equipment. These patch panels will be terminated with jacks in a number between 6 and 24. The remaining SM6 boxes on each of the floors will be placed along the wall approximately every 20 feet (See Attached Drawings). These boxes will be fully populated with six jacks each. At the central point, cables will terminate into patch panels. The patch panels will be installed in a relay rack along with the LAN switch. The LAN switch will be populated with multiple 100Mbps ports, and a high-speed fiber up-link. Patch cords will be used to patch from the patch panels to the switch. This is the standard model recommend by the Data Comm group for Cat 5 installations.

Future Goals

The over-all strategy is to upgrade the entire network infrastructure in the B0 Assembly Hall complex. The next phase of this project will include upgrading the office areas as well as the detector floor. Because of the distance limitations of UTP, a mix of fiber and Cat 5 cabling will be utilized is this phase of the upgrade. A proposal outlining a detail wiring plan will be drafted in the very near future.

Cost Summary

The cost of this upgrade has been broken down on a per floor basis. Again, this only includes hardware associated with the experiment. The LAN switch was not included in

the cost summary because it has not been determined what platform would best suit this application. The option of tube cable has also been included in this estimate.
