IPv6 Early Testing

Fermilab is connected to the world-wide IPv6 test network, the 6bone. As of September, 1997, the number of hosts running IPv6 at FNAL is still very small. The Data Communications group is soliciting requests to join the IPv6 testing. The support we can provide is minimal!

Current News Items

26-Sep-1997

The changes mentioned in the news item of 9-Sep-1997 (below) will be implemented on our network next week.

9-Sep-1997

Certain changes in Neighbor Discovery are being phased in concurrently with the new addressing architecture. These changes prevent old-format and new-format IPv6 addresses from interoperating on a single LAN. Be sure to check which format(s) your implementation supports. As of 9 September 1997, all our LANS are running with the old-style addresses.

How To Join

To get started with IPv6, first look for an available implementation for your operating system. Check here to see whether IPv6 support is available on your subnet already. If it isn't, contact me to see if support is feasible. I make no promises! All resources are limited. If IPv6 is available on your subnet, contact me anyway and find out about the current state of testing before you begin.

You can use the FNAL mailserv to subscribe to the ipv6-testing list for news and information.

Workgroups With IPv6 Support

This list is current at the time of writing, but additions and deletions are possible. IPv6 is not (yet) a supported service.

The following workgroups have IPv6 support available as of 9 September, 1997. Once you have installed IPv6 on a machine attached to one of these workgroups, auto-configuration should assign you both link-local and global addresses. (However, entering these addresses in the DNS is not automatic. Do that through MISNET.)
